Starting on 20 March, Opera Africa will be kicking off the State Theatre’s 2010 season with a brand new production of La Bohème.

Continuing the company’s mission to foster new audiences for opera and to promote talented young soloists and choristers, Opera Africa has chosen to stage one of the Italian repertoire’s most popular works, a favourite among audiences and performers alike for its timeless themes of young love and heartbreak and its breathtaking score, which contains some of the most beautiful pieces in all of opera.

In the lead roles of Mimi and Rodolfo are Hanli Stapela and Stéfan Louw. Stapela is one of South Africa’s most admired sopranos, excelling both as a theatrical performer and a concert artist. This role is her Opera Africa debut. Louw is among the country’s leading lyric tenors and has already garnered much praise for his interpretation of Rodolfo in the acclaimed 2005 production of La Bohème. The supporting cast includes Otto Maidi as Colline, Aubrey Lodewyk as Marcello, Kelebogile Boikanyo as Musetta and one of the veterans of South African opera Rouel Beukes, who takes on the duel roles of Benoit and Alcindoro.

The production is directed by Themi Venturas, a long-time associate of Opera Africa, who was one of the creative driving forces behind the trailblazing Princess Magogo. The ever-popular visual artist Andrew Verster has designed the sets and costumes. Leading the production from a musical perspective is young American conductor Timothy Myers, who is currently distinguishing himself with orchestras around the world and, since May 2008, has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Opera Company of North Carolina.

La Bohème is the first fruit of Opera Africa’s three-year funding deal with the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and is thus, hopefully, a portent of many good things to come from the company.
